Chicago Association of Black Social Workers Condemns Tragic Death of Sonya Massey

Sonya Massey

The Chicago Association of Black Social Workers (CABSW) is deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic death of Sonya Massey; a 36-year-old Black mother, daughter and a beloved member of the Black community. Sonya Massey, fatally gunned down at the hands of a Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy on July 6th, 2024 after calling 911 due to concerns of a possible intruder in her home.

Sonya’s death is a stark reminder of the systemic racism and violence that Black people continue to face in our society. As social workers, we are committed to advocating for justice and equality for all individuals and we stand in solidarity with Sonya’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

This tragic incident is part of a disturbing cycle of Black people being killed at the hands of law enforcement. Despite calls for reform and accountability, these acts of violence persist, leaving our communities in a constant state of fear and mourning.

We demand a full and transparent investigation into Sonya’s death and urge the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department to hold those responsible, accountable for their actions to the full extent. We also call on our community to come together to support each other and to work towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.

CABSW extends our deepest condolences to Sonya’s family and loved ones and we will continue to fight for justice on her behalf.
